Spending Christmas Eve going through bins isn´t on our list of Christmas traditions. However, that was exactly what we were doing on that day at 2 AM, full of potato salad, in our fancy clothes, in front of our house.
My mom accidentally threw away a part of my cousin´s present and was determined to get it back. My cousin wished for an aquarium for her moss ball. After Christmas dinner, we received a phone call from my aunt asking where the aquarium holder was. My mom went pale since she didn´t know the package was supposed to contain an aquarium holder. Since the aquarium was fragile, the box was full of sawdust. She took it out and didn´t think twice before sending me to throw the box away. Therefore, my mom had no idea it was hiding the holder for the aquarium. Immediately, we went to the bins to try to dig it out.
So it happened that our family stood staring at the bins overflowing with trash. Nobody wanted the torn wrapping paper in their homes, so everybody immediately put it in the bins after unwrapping the gift. I vaguely remembered throwing the box with the missing piece of wood in an almost empty bin, which meant it would be at the bottom. We were screwed.
My mom is no loser, so she bravely started to go through the trash. After a while, I remembered throwing it away in another bin, so she gave me an angry look, returned the garbage to the bin and moved to the other bin. It took us about 15 minutes, but we found the box.
My cousin now has a beautiful home for her moss ball, and we have an unorthodox memory of our Christmas 2024!
Love,
